Customers line up for new BlackBerry Storm

Hundreds of people lined up outside some Verizon Wireless stores to buy the new BlackBerry Storm on Friday, but many walked away empty handed.

The Storm, which has been hyped for months, went on sale Friday morning. The device is the first BlackBerry phone to have a touch screen, making it a strong competitor to the Apple iPhone on AT&T's network. Since Verizon Wireless announced it would be the exclusive U.S. carrier for the Storm, the wireless operator has been expecting it to be a hit. In fact, it's the only new phone the company is introducing before the busy holiday season. Last year, Verizon launched four new phones before the holidays.

Reuters reported earlier Friday that more than 200 people lined up outside a Verizon Wireless store in midtown Manhattan, and the store was sold out of the new phone within an hour of opening at 8 a.m. Other stores in Washington, D.C. and New Jersey also had lines of 100 people or more, Reuters said.

And in San Francisco smaller lines of about 20 people waited outside Verizon stores at 8 a.m. Of course, these lines are small compared to the frenzy surrounding launches for the Apple iPhone. For both the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G released in July, people waited in line for days outside Apple stores and AT&T stores around the country to be among the first to get their hands on the gadget.

Brenda Raney, a spokeswoman for Verizon Wireless, said that Verizon Wireless has plenty of BlackBerry Storms in its warehouses around and that customers who weren't able to get a phone on Friday will be able to order the phone and have it delivered to their homes within four to five days.

Raney also said that stores will be getting more shipments of Storms. She knew of three that had already gotten shipments this afternoon. Two stores in Manhattan, the Verizon Store on 34th St. and one at 1095 Avenue of the Americas, and one store in Paramus, NJ received shipments Friday afternoon.

Other stores may be getting shipments on Saturday, so customers may want to check out their local Verizon store over the weekend, she suggested.

Vodafone Group, one of Verizon Wireless's two parent companies, is selling the BlackBerry Storm in Europe. It also said it was struggling to meet demand for the storm when it launched the device, according to Reuters.

Initial reviews of the BlackBerry Storm have been fairly good. The device, which has a touch screen, media player, full browser and comes with 9 Gigabytes of storage (1 GB on the device and an 8 GB microSD card), is seen as a strong alternative to the iPhone for customers who prefer Verizon Wireless's network. But critics also point out the phone's shortcomings in comparison to the iPhone. For example touch screen requires users actually push down on the screen to select a button or click through a link, making typing on the device somewhat slow and cumbersome. And the biggest complaint is the Storm's lack of Wi-Fi, which is supported in the iPhone.

what bunch of hooey - hype phones and then not provide enough in the store for demand? why would I want to order one? just ship enough to the stores and stop making life so difficult - we've got enough to do already than to put up with marketing bullsH$*!

Come on! When the iPhone came out...not everyone got one. I lined up at 4:00am and only about 50 people actually got the phone. Others had to wait. And...come one...about the lines and the incredible iPhone bias on CNET. There were just as many people at the Verizon store this AM as there were at the AT&T store when the iPhone was released. The only difference...anything Apple or Jobs does seems to command prime news positioning...and the release of the BB Storm is buried at the bottom. I own an iPhone, but the Storm is really cool and a great phone. Ignore the VERY superficial reviews you've seen so far. Let the phone get legs for a few week...or better yet, try it for yourself. Overall, BB always will command the business communications market. The iPhone is cool, but you own it only because it's cool. There are many nits users have about the iPhone...but they all seem to be forgotten when you speak about how smooth the screen transitions are and how nicely it scrolls. However, those are all form over function arguments. Let's give it a chance...and not all trash it just because it approaches a few things in a different way...

I'm an iPhone user and think that the Storm looks good. I'm looking forward to playing around with it. However you are gravely mistaken about the unbalanced press with the iPhone release. Most people in my area (Boston), went to an Apple store, not to AT&T. Lines snaked back and forth and out of the mall for the 3g.

Just think, if Apple wasn't busy being AT&T's 8!+¢# then those would have been iPhones.

Actually, I read that Apple offered Verizon the iPhone first, but they turned it down.

I used Verizon for years and I can tell you why they would have turned down the iPhone. They do not want a wifi option to cut into their service costs that START at about $80 a month. Why do people pay this kind of money for a smartphone? If people were not so eager to spend such excessive costs for service then there might be a better open smartphone like those in Europe.

Al of us who develop innovative products that sell owe a debt to Jobs, Apple and those, like the Storm that have followed. It is scary for a company to hire techies and launch into a different direction. The dramatic success of the touch screen phones have tipped the balance just a little toward the voices who claim that if you don't obsolete your products, your competition will.

And isn't RIM the company that survived a court forcing discredited patents from a patent troll firm to keep their doors open. The check for that travesty of justice would have bailed out a bank, but evidenly instead of conservativey licking their wounds and fighting a rear guard action, their management has very obviously struck a blow for new and better.

If we are not careful and keep listening to the voices of innovations, we may even prosper in this time of blatant handouts.

As a LONG time verizon customer.... I was Very disappointed to find out wednesday that ONLY NEW customers would be sold this phone in the store.. current customers had to order.. I was called my the store clerk where I had been on a waiting list to receive the phone.

This was the Case ALL over the Houston area... I wentto three different stores... got the same story AND spoke to several friends who had the experience..
It is disheartening.. particularly for those of us for decided NOT to jump to A T and T to get the iphone... we are rewarded by being told we can order and it will take UP TO TWO weeks to get this new phone that all the new customers they got alreadyhave theirs in hand...

I'm not sure why they told the Houston customers that. I have been with Verizon for about ten years and picked up a new Storm on Friday. I even used my "New Every Two" discount ($100) towards the phone. Granted I had to go to two separate places, the first was Costco who didn't get their shipment in, the second was Circuit City after a call to the Verizon store confirmed they were sold out. I was one of 5 people standing outside the door when CC opened and picked up their last phone. While the guy was setting mine up they received another shipment of 5 more so my hubby grabbed one too. Of course, they were sold out of those by the time we left the store.

And by the way, I LOVE IT!

The end was a bit biased when it crticized the SurePress feature of the Storm. Some people love it, while others hate it: it's a preference, not a fault.

I want you to be aware of a very non-professional practice that took place at a corporate store in Totowa, NJ. I went to the store today to try to upgrade my phone to a Blackberry Storm. The representative told me they did not have any in stock and I would have to get the phone through the mail. My friend who has another wireless carrier called the same store and asked them if they had any in stock. After they found that he is not a Verizon customer they told him that they have them in stock and he could come and get one today. I understand why they want to reserve the phone for a new customer but it is unacceptable to be deceptive. Verizon Wireless representatives should make it known that since the phone is in limited supply, preference is being given to new customers. I hope that this is an isolated incident rather than how Verizon Wireless is dealing with the limited supply of the device at their corporate stores. Anyone else experience this?

of course it's not an iphone....that's why they call it the BLACKBERRY STORM. lol.

wow, how much did apple pay this lady bonnie cha? she has nothing good to say about the storm, and just thrash talks the storm. yeah the click screen will limit the speed of typing an email, but who really cares. the phone might be slower and the browser better on the iphone, but i'm sure with some software upgrades...they could probably fix those issues. why not compare things like ummm...removable memory, removable battery, a video recorder, virtual voicemail...etc.

I was in the store located in League City Texas and was told they would take my name for an appointment on that Friday for first option to buy my Storm. They took my name and called me on Tuesday to give me my time of 6am. If the time changed they would call me back. It was the one of the store managers I believe by the name of David. I called on Wednesday to confirm and he was not there. Another employee answered my question and said the time would be 7am and I would be on the list. I went by the store that Wednesday night and David was not there buy I spoke to a lady sales person who took my name. Neither of the sales people knew how they would handle the appointments but that I would be served before others who showed up with out an appointment. David called my on Thursday and stated they would not have any phones in the store on Friday and not to bother coming in. So I had them order the phone and they said it would be delivered by the end of the next week. On Friday a different sales person called me at noon asking if I was coming in to pick up my Storm. I told him the past history but if he had mine I would be there. He spoke with David while on the phone with me and then stated he made a mistake that they did not have any phones. So I went in that evening and got into an arguement with David and Tim, I guess the manager that they lied to me. They said they never had phones there that day yet I suspect they did have some and sold them and that Tim had mine when he called me earlier in the day. I have no recourse and I guess my phone will be in one day some time. But I will not stand by to be lied to. I will file with the BB and upper management. Anyone have ideas as to how to respond this this with them? thanks
Gary

The phone is slow and I didn't like the click feel. It felt like it would break. I would get one but I sure would get the warranty.

I own a Blackberry storm, and I am more than glad that I took the gamble and made the purchase. I upfraded from the 8830, Now that I have gotten used to the interface I can move around nearly as fast as on the 8830. I know that as time goes on, I will pick up even more speed in the operation of the phone. As far as bugs go, I have yet to see a product that doesn't have bugs in the initial release. As always the the OS will improve over time whit updates. I just love this phone. I have not really experienced any shortcomings as far as I'm concerned. It is indeed a very useful device. Very state of the art. With excellent security features and gorgeous resolution. I like the clickable screen better than the small actuall buttons on the 8830. I am very much at home with this Blackberry, and I am extremely satisfied.
