Will Colbert's 'Operation Humble Kanye' work?

Editor's note: CNET News does not endorse Stephen Colbert and has no formal opinion on whether Kanye West needs to be humbled.

Comedian Stephen Colbert has an army and I'm in it. Together, we got a bridge in Hungary named after him (though to be honest, I didn't actually vote; I helped my team in spirit from the comfort of my couch). Colbert had an eagle named after him. He's helped countless candidates for office with his undeniable "Colbert Bump." He even got Apple to send him an iPhone simply by holding out his hand to the camera screen day after day and saying, "I want."

But now Colbert wants something else, and as a die-hard fan I am worried he might not get it. How would our beloved leader handle defeat? I'm not sure.

If you caught his show on Monday or Tuesday you know he is asking for the Colbert Nation to go on iTunes today at exactly 5 p.m. EST to purchase his album, A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All. Currently, Kanye West has the No. 1 album on iTunes and Colbert is peeved. (His is No. 15.) Thus, he wants us all, at one moment, to collectively catapult his album to the top. It's not to help Colbert, he insists, but to humble Kanye.

He said, "I want boots on the ground, and do your Twitter blogging to each other and get it all together--whatever you kids do. It's important."

Now, here's the thing: I adore this man, but I also watched his Christmas special, and as much as I love Fountains of Wayne (bassist Adam Schlesinger composed the songs for the show), I found it rather, well, OK. Jon Stewart's song was hilarious, but the rest? Maybe not worth staying up for, especially not a whole month before Christmas.

So, as much as I want to do my part, I'm really not sure I can throw down any money to buy this DRM-laden album I'm sure I'll never play. I mean, we're in a recession--we're lucky to have the stolen music we already downloaded.

My question to you is: Are you going to log on to iTunes today to help Colbert catapult his album to No. 1? Or are you, like me, just going to hope it happens without you actually having to purchase, yes, a Christmas album on which Willie Nelson sings to the baby Jesus about the joys of weed?

I pre-ordered it, so I got it the day it came out, but I'm doing the best I can to get the word out. It's also important to remember that proceeds from both the iTunes EP and the DVD for "A Colbert Christmas" go to Feeding America, a charity dedicated to feeding the hungry in our country.

The hungry? The big problem facing low-income people is obesity. The money should go to padlocking their pantries.

I think the reason that low-income people are sometimes obese is because they can only afford cheap food, and most cheap food, including most fast food, are not healthy food. Also, if people are worried that they might not be able to afford the next meal, then perhaps they're also eating more at each meal that they can get.

Love Stephen and this is his way to help American help themselves with laughter and Feeding America.

You know he rules of engagement and minimum criteria to participate in the Feeding America proceeds from the sale of his product.

I hoping that it will include receipes to live heathlier along with the right food to make it happen.

I feel the same way. If the christmas special was as good as his book I'd definately do this. Unfortunately it was hit and miss. I like the sharp wit he has on his show but the christmas special kept itself closer to the ridiculous than the ridicule.

It is actually an iTunes Plus album which is not DRM-laden...

Emily, Colbert's album is actually available as an iTunes Plus download, meaning there is no DRM, so that's sort of an inaccurate critique.

That still doesn't mean it's automatically worth $8 though.

I'd do it just because Kanye West is an egotistical ***hole

Great question - My pantry is empty.

I'll buy it, but only because it's for charity and because I have a ton of credit on my iTunes account.

I am going to sit back and enjoy the bad free iTunes downloads. If you want to help you can but I will sit back and keep my money.

Listen, Jon Stewart's bit about Hanukah was OK, but John Legend's "Nutmeg" was juvenile hilarity at its finest....

Looking at the rankings as of 15 minutes ago, Kanye has already been dethroned by Britney Spears and Akon while Colbert is still at 15.

Incidentally, I bought #14 while I was looking. I couldn't resist getting a DRM-free version of The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds for $4.99. Wanted to listen to it for some time now.

I'd get it, but since iTunes still doesn't work in Linux... He really should sell it through Amazon or another music site that will work for pretty much anyone on any platform.

The only song I thought was worth downloading is Feist's angel customer service bit.

Yep, loved that bit from Feist. I'm still humming it today.

"a Christmas album on which Willie Nelson sings to the baby Jesus about the joys of weed"

You know, I was kinda on the fence about purchasing the album on iTunes until I read that sentence. Then I said to myself, "I want."

Oh, yeah - I got it on iTunes at 5pm alright. Colbert4Ever!

Did anyone find Colbert's line about Kanye's Auto-Tune usage hilarious? I did. Almost as hilarious as that which started Operation Humble Kanye, ?I realize that my place and position in history is that I will go down as the voice of this generation, of this decade, I will be the loudest voice,?

Kanye is Ridiculous to try and take this decade away from Colbert :-)

Currently it looks like West has dropped to 3, Britney is 1, and Colbert is still 15.

Thanks, jasimf, for commenting about the DRM-free nature of the download. Duly noted, and that does make it a tad more appealing...
At this point, it looks as though the "Colbert Surge" hasn't worked, though perhaps it takes iTunes a while to update its Top lists. And I agree that the song "Nutmeg" was pretty awesome.

The only thing I didn't like about the show was the annoying laugh track. Otherwise the music was great, and the comedy very entertaining. I'm buyin', you betcha!
